Mineral Vs Chemical Sunscreens Which should you get?

How they work:

Before we determine which type of sunscreen is better, we must first examine how they each work. Mineral sunscreen (sometimes called physical sunscreen) is predominantly composed of two main ingredients: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients sit on the surface of the skin and act as a physical barrier against the harmful rays of the sun. Chemical sunscreen contains a combination of any of the following ingredients: oxybenzone, octisalate, avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octocrylene. Unlike mineral sunscreen, chemical sunscreen does not sit on the surface of the skin, it gets absorbed and penetrates the skin on a deeper level. This may sound intense, but there have not been any negative repercussions associated with the use of chemical sunscreen.

Essentially mineral sunscreens act like a shield that deflect the sun’s rays, whereas chemical sunscreens act like a sponge that absorbs UV light and does not allow it to disrupt our skin’s cells.

Let’s Discuss: so which should you choose?

Now this all boils down to personal preference. If you are looking for a sunscreen to wear under makeup, chemical sunscreens may be more beneficial since they do not sit on top of skin and leave a sticky residue behind. However, if you are looking for more immediate protection, mineral sunscreen may be the way to go! Mineral sunscreen begins its protection as soon as it is applied, chemical sunscreen on the other hand should be applied 30 minutes prior to sun exposure for maximal protection.

Have a Pooltastic Day and Don’t Forget:

The main function of sunscreen is to reduce short and long-term risks of sun damage including: hyperpigmentation, skin aging, and even fatal diseases like skin cancer. With this in mind, most dermatologists recommend the use of either type of sunscreen, in fact some may even recommend the use of both for optimal sun protection!
